Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

This post is an update on the one I wrote a month ago on the subject of tele lenses for my Canon 350d.

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

I would like to say a huge thank you to the people who left comments and helped me to make an eventual easy decision on what to buy. Although the lens I opted for was out of my initial lens budget, I took the good advice left by Tristan Owen, The Pete and Peter and invested a bit more for a nifty feature, Image Stabiliser.

The Image Stabiliser allows for much sharper images in low light and long zoom. It allows me to take better photos without the need of a tripod. Perfect for sports photography and wildlife shots.

The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM telephoto zoom lens has been developed to meet the high-performance standards that today’s photographers demand. Improved Image Stabilizer Technology provides up to three stops of “shake” correction, and the “Mode 2” option stabilizes images while panning with a moving subject. Compared to the original Canon EF 75-300mm IS zoom lens, this telephoto lens has faster autofocus, and overall the lens is lighter and has a smaller diameter than the original. The zoom ring can be locked at the 70mm position, making this powerful lens easy to transport, too. (Overall rating 8.8 by

I promise to snap some photos with my new toy soon, but I am a little concerned of looking like a paedo on Wimbledon Common with my massive zoom lens…. I will be taking it to France and Spain for my September holidays though (can’t wait!) as this was one of my main reasons for biting the bullet and breaking the bank account so soon.

  1. “…looking like a paedo on Wimbledon Common with my massive zoom lens…. I will be taking it to France and Spain”

Hehe =) because in France and Spain looking like a paedo is normal πŸ˜‰

  2. Nice one Mark,

Can’t wait to see some results.

If you ever want to meet up and do some photography around London town let me know.
    Not stalking or anything.

  3. Peter Baker: Exactly! I’m glad someone else sees my logic πŸ™‚ Although in Spain we are right next to a nudist beach apparently… will be good subject matter to test it on. Haha.

The Pete: Thanks mate, I might take you up on that offer. We can look like paedo stalkers together.

  4. Great choice Mark and thanks for the kind words. You’ve got an incredible lens and I’m sure it will bring you much satisfaction. I Look forward to seeing some photo’s. All the best.

  5. i just rented the 70-200m f2.8 IS for a wedding i shot last weekend. what a beast it was! a bit hard to deal with, but the images were sharp and lovely. after having spent most my time with a 16-35 and a 50m lens, having the ability to zoom was uber fun. although, i felt a bit too paparazzi though. sneaking around in the bushes to capture candids….

  6. Lisa, my new lens is the bomb! It takes stunning photos, haven’t taken many yet, but tested it out at a rugby game and the sharpness was incredible, zoomed to the max at the opposite end of the field in the stand! Check out the pics here. Strongly recommend the lens.

Thanks Tristan for convincing me πŸ™‚
