New year, new music

My Lastfm account and I have quite a close bond, in fact, according to my profile page Lastfm has played me over 1729 songs! What a mate. I’ve discovered lots of indie rock bands, budding solo artists, and emo ballets, but my latest finds have not been through Lastfm, but through Facebook.

Andrew ScharAndrew Schär

The first artist I’d like to bring to your attention is Andrew Schär. Andrew and I were mates at the university of Cape Town, we both studied Information Systems. Andrew Schär is now known better as:

“a singer/songwriter from South Africa, known for his informal gigs, and ability to make up songs on the fly. He has spent time recording in London, but returned home to South Africa, where his heart is. With somewhat of a Jack Johnson/John Mayer style, and lyrics that tell a story of broken hearts and idealistic hopes, his music will hit home with a resounding glow.”

I have been flooded with work this past week, and haven’t found anytime to write anything of importance, instead I found some good reading elsewhere. Please excuse the rather lazy post, but I hope the links below provide you with some entertainment. Hey it is friday after all.

PSDTuts

Creating a fantastic fantasy night sky in photoshop

I can’t believe I haven’t found this site before. PSDTuts is FreelanceSwitch’s sister site and brings you some quality photoshop tutorials, presented beautifully. I’ve visited a lot of photoshop tutorial sites before, but this one teaches you things you actually want to know – current design trends.

A rookie guide to digital SLR cameras

There comes a time in every point-and-shooter’s life when he or she wonders if there is more to photography than a palm-sized block of aluminum stowed away in one’s pocket.” If that is you then take a read over Mike Davidson’s great post. Mike informs you of exactly what you should be thinking about when in the process of purchasing a SLR camera.

Isn’t it incredible how a picture taken out of context can have such a detrimental impact. That’s what I was concerned about when writing this article, but nevertheless I’m going to post it as i’d love to hear your point of view on this subject. The subject being training wild African elephants.

This post is a follow up to my last post where I mentioned I visited EFAF (definitely in need of website re-design!) – Elephants For Africa Forever – near Tzaneem in Mpumalanga just after Christmas.

It’s been 3 and a bit weeks since my last post. Eeekk.

Since then I’ve been to Mpumalanga for a wonderful Christmas break and spent a few days in the middle of the African bush with first, second and third cousins. The time was spent on open land rovers searching the bush for game, braaing/barbequeing heaps of meat, swimming in a pool overlooking a river bed frequented by all sorts of buck, playing poker, and drinking beer watching the most amazing African sunsets.

The break was much appreciated and I think I am now ready for another turbo charged year of work and travels in Europe. One thing this break has proven to me is that we live in an amazingly beautiful, vibrant country that I cannot wait to return to once I have achieved my goals in the UK this year. (more…)
